The loneliness remains
I’m still praying and processing so much from our firstborn’s recent visit. One of the loneliest things is to feel strong sadness, confusion or grief, because I tend to feel it alone. I know that even in a healthy relationship, we can only share our individual solitude. In essence we are alone, and while the presence of people and love comforts, it has been God that pierces and enters my solitude. Still, I long for a partner who will also initiate conversations of shared thoughts and feelings. Maybe most men don’t do this, but I wish for one who would also desire and need this in relationship. After all these years, I’m more unsure than ever as to how much or how deeply my husband really feels. I’m so sad about that.

When Surrogacy and Adoption Goes Wrong

Several months ago we read about a couple from Australia who hired a Thai surrogate so she could bear the child they always wanted. During month three of the surrogate’s pregnancy the couple were informed that the 21 year-old surrogate was having twins, one of whom tested positive for Down’s syndrome. According to the surrogate, the parents-to-be implored her to have an abortion but she refused.
When the twins were born the agency who arranged the surrogacy delivered the “healthy” twin girl to the couple, leaving behind the baby boy who also had a congenital heart defect. Once the rejection of this little boy went viral, kind people around the world began donating monies, more than $150,000, to the surrogate mother who vowed to keep the baby and was surprised and heartened by the generosity of strangers.

In my first year of law school, my Torts professor made a wonderful statement that still rings true. “A divorce client is never really satisfied,” he said at the end of a day talking about assault, “because the one thing they really want to happen is something that won’t. What every divorce client really wants, at the end of the day, is to not be getting a divorce.” Now, of course, there are exceptions to this. The person leaving an abusive spouse sees divorce as a relief, not a burden. The husband or wife who is leaving a long-delinquent spouse in order to finally lead a new life may view divorce as merely a rung on the ladder.
